Sem Borst received the M.Sc. degree in applied mathematics from the University of Twente,
The Netherlands, in 1990, and the Ph.D. degree from the University of Tilburg, The Netherlands,
in 1994. In 1995, he joined the Mathematics of Networks and Systems research department of
Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, USA. Since 1998, he has a (part-time) appointment as Full
Professor in Stochastic Operations Research in the Department of Mathematics and Computer
Science at Eindhoven University of Technology, and also maintains a (part-time) affiliation with
Bell Laboratories. Sem's main research interests are in the area of performance evaluation and resource allocation
algorithms for stochastic networks, in particular communication systems, and lie at the interface
of applied probability, stochastic operations research and networking. He serves or has served
on the editorial boards of several journals, such as ACM Transactions on Modeling and Performance
of Computing Systems, IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking, Mathematical Methods of Operations
Research, Operations Research Letters,Performance Evaluation, Queueing Systems and Wireless
Networks, as well on program committees of various conferences. Sem was (co-)recipient of the best-paper awards at Sigmetrics/Performance 1992 and IEEE Infocom
2003, the 2001 Yosef Levy Prize, and the 2005 Van Dantzig Prize.
