As a former mathematical olympiad student, Mehmet Akif completed his Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering and Mathematics as a double major student at Boğaziçi University. Then, he received his Master's degree in Mathematics at the same university. His master's thesis concerns two new variatons of cover times in simple random walks on graphs.

As well as his interest in probability theory, particularly in cover times and random permutations, he also works on problems related with Ramsey theory and extremal graph theory. From January 2021, he will start his PhD at University of Amsterdam under the supervision of Viresh Patel.

This position has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement Grant Agreement No 945045.
