Madelon de Kemp (UvA-NETWORKS) won the ASML Graduation Prize for Mathematics. This prize consists of an amount of €5000.- and will be awarded to her on 28 November 2016 by the Koninklijke Hollandsche Maatschappij der Wetenschappen (KHMW).

Madelon received her BSc and MSc in Mathematics at the VU University Amsterdam. Her research, titled  Robust Appointment Scheduling and Sequencing for Many Patients was about planning appointments at, for example, the doctor’s.

Research

In her research Madelon tried to find ways to plan appointments with the less possible waiting time for both patient and doctor. She looked for schedules that could even be applicable in the most difficult planning situations. She found a formula for the optimal planning in case of multiple identical patients. This formula serves as an approximation for situations with many patients. Another problem that was tackled was the sequence of the appointments. Here Madelon focused on the best possible planning of different groups of patients. Her conclusion was that variability of the real time an appointment takes, starting with the smallest variability, would give the most optimal result.

Madelon is currently working on her PhD research at the Korteweg-de Vries Institute for Mathematics. In this research she also focuses on appointment scheduling and sequencing in a robust setting.
